The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
