In a significant move ahead of next year's general election, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Tackle Youth Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.
"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.
The September revolt was sparked by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.
Details of the Fresh Electoral Partnership
According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the country's older political leadership. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Broader Government Consultations Underway
In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of major political figures. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the protests.
Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
