Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes are granted the ability to challenge specific decisions from the official, following the practice currently in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step follows just a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review other decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is no limit on the number of challenges a player can initiate.

Case in Point

A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough call for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled the player was guilty of interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Other Changes

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
